Great story Wesley! It's very inspiring for an introvert photographer like me! By the way, my favourite female photographer is Sally Mann: the raw style of documenting her life and family is a true gem in my opinion!
Jessica Todd Harper - I had the privilege of meeting her several years ago and have been influenced by her focus on family imagery, generational connection, and the messiness of life. She's showing at the Smithsonian this year! https://www.jessicatoddharper.com/
Amber Bracken - Canadian photographer, photojournalist, and all-round bad ass. World Press Photo winner, documented Indigenous protesters of British Columbia logging, and was arrested illegally by the RCMP for it. https://www.amberbracken.com/
Margaret Bourke-White. Her fearlessness in getting into position to take the shots she wanted, plus the way she used every day industrial objects to tell a bigger story.
I really loved the story behind these! Just out of curiosity, what camera did you use to be inconspicuous?! And favourite female photographer is Sally Mann. Her work is forever influential and timeless.
Uta Barth is a favorite — her use of light and shadow in such simple scenes is incredible… she makes the viewer stop and examine the image. Lately, I’ve also been enjoying Leah Frances’ work of diners in the US.
I'd love to see a selfie with the yellow raincoat trying to be incognito :)
Francesca Woodman - I find her work so captivating like she was putting all herself out there like a confession.

Awesome photos and story, Wesley. The topic reminded me of a quite similar project I did in Hong Kong a couple of years ago:

Amazing read!
Were all of these taken on film? I'm kinda trying to figure out the lighting conditions in the indoor shots :)

I haven't read your blog posts in a while and it's been so inspiring to read this one.
My fave is Vivian Maier, for her bravery despite her private nature. Her work is stunning.
Greatly written article! Thank you for taking us with you on that journey, I was definitely in Tokyo in my mind while reading it haha
Nice work and the photos are iconic.

Thanks for sharing - another great read.
A shout out for Pia Riverola, recently got her first book.

Gabriela Biló. She is a Brazilian photojournalist responsible for many great images of the Brazilian government in the past ~10 years.

Looking at the contemporary female photographers I think Carlijn Jacobs is one of my favorites. I like the use of color and light in her photographes.
Great story...Loved it!
