Great story Wesley! It's very inspiring for an introvert photographer like me! By the way, my favourite female photographer is Sally Mann: the raw style of documenting her life and family is a true gem in my opinion!

Awesome photos and story, Wesley. The topic reminded me of a quite similar project I did in Hong Kong a couple of years ago:

Amazing read!

Were all of these taken on film? I'm kinda trying to figure out the lighting conditions in the indoor shots :)

thanks Jan, not these were shot on digital. film would have been extremely hard as it was quite dark in there.

Ah alright. I thought it was digital but then the Carmencita blurb threw me off!

I had not yet discovered the amazingness that is Carmencita back then :)

Jessica Todd Harper - I had the privilege of meeting her several years ago and have been influenced by her focus on family imagery, generational connection, and the messiness of life. She's showing at the Smithsonian this year! https://www.jessicatoddharper.com/

I'd love to see a selfie with the yellow raincoat trying to be incognito :)

Francesca Woodman - I find her work so captivating like she was putting all herself out there like a confession.

I haven't read your blog posts in a while and it's been so inspiring to read this one.

My fave is Vivian Maier, for her bravery despite her private nature. Her work is stunning.

Margaret Bourke-White. Her fearlessness in getting into position to take the shots she wanted, plus the way she used every day industrial objects to tell a bigger story.

I really loved the story behind these! Just out of curiosity, what camera did you use to be inconspicuous?! And favourite female photographer is Sally Mann. Her work is forever influential and timeless.

yes yes yes for Sally Mann, one of my top faves too! I used a camera that does not at all qualify and inconspicuous haha the Canon 5D either Mark III or Mark IV, I don't remember which, but they look exactly the same.

Uta Barth is a favorite — her use of light and shadow in such simple scenes is incredible… she makes the viewer stop and examine the image. Lately, I’ve also been enjoying Leah Frances’ work of diners in the US.
