This is going to be very cliché, but I mainly photograph for a 1-person-audience: my 6y/o daughter. My goal is to document our lives together and print a single 30x30 book every year. And I enjoy using any type of camera to achieve this goal.
I love fog! Every time I look out the window and see fog, I get excited. The atmosphere on a foggy day is just so special. Fog is definitely a big motivating factor to grab my camera and go for a walk!
The light! The light is the most powerful motivation for image making. The right ray of light through a window is enough to make me drop what I am doing, set up the tripod, and capture something new. Fleeting light is my number one motivator.
I am inspired by the feeling that everyone who I pass by has a story just as or more complex and interesting as my own. It's this overwhelming sense of missing out on a world that slips between my fingers every day.
I’m a big fan when contexts duke it out for the frame, and sometimes it’s not a fair fight. I remember taking a picture of a pigeon eating crumbs under the el tracks in downtown Chicago, and only until later did I notice I managed to squeeze into the corner the faceless statue of Ceres that stands on top of the Chicago Board of Trade building. Since then, I try to capture that dynamic, whether it’s an easter egg on the streets or people squished to the size of ants in landscape shots, etc.
Right now, I take the most photos of my six month old daughter; sometimes with my phone, sometimes with my camera. But besides her, I search for moments where the light is falling just right
Scan day from the lab is my motivation to keep shooting! But really I think online platforms where we can share and Sicu’s our works is what keeps me motivated.
Great interview and really apt timing for me as I step into more documentary style work I've also been having the thoughts Sissi had where I'd meet up with people and be like damn that's so true yet not have it recorded. I found a little recorder and will start using that now when meeting up. This interview felt like another message to make sure to do this!
On what inspires me the most to pick up the camera I'm with you on the sun Wesley. I'm feeling more creatives and motivated with spring here. This coupled with the knowing that I can document and share interesting stories that could hopefully inspire others and bring some positivity and authenticity into this world really get me excited.
Realizing that I will move through phases of growth and change in life without ever being fully aware of it is what motivates me to pick up my camera and shoot. I've gone through a lot of changes in the past and seeing photos from that time before, not even of myself specifically but of the environment and world around me at that time period have reminded me of what it felt like to be Drew in 2016, in 2017, when my wife and I moved into our first apartment. There's a significance to being aware of who you were in the past. Every day I feel like so much beauty is seen only once and then lost forever. Photography is my way of putting more sand in the top of the hourglass for a little while. I savor life through photography.
I’m in a little bit of a creative drought right now. At the moment, what inspires me to shoot is good light and new gear (or modified gear). I recently modified a Hasselblad back to shoot panorama (around 24 x 56) and am exited to try that out soon (hopefully later this week).
I feel more inclined to photograph on a rainy day and then it just clears up right in the afternoon. Usually leads to the most beautiful clouds and sunsets!!
What inspires me to shoot the most? When I see precious moments/interactions between people is usually when I reach for my camera... but also amazing light!
For me.. it’s when the dog looks at me, I look at her and its for time for just us... when we leave the house with camera, film and just the notion to explore. No more plans other than being home later to make everyone breakfast.. but before that to not think, to walk and to feel and to take pictures. I think it’s motivating because it’s probably one of the few things I find calming - with absolutely no pressure.
After a dull and dreary winter I'm anxious to document the beauty of Spring. Sunshine equals happiness to me and I want to share that with joy with others through my photography.

I so very much love this Vincent! And I hope to do the same!

I recommend a trip to San Francisco, best fog I've ever seen :) and consistent!
I have been to San Francisco twice and we always had sunshine. 🤣
haha gotta get out to Mt. Tamalpais!

Light is everything :) great answer!

I can only imagine how much a child inspires :)

Thanks to both of you for sharing your time and talents!
People make me inspired to pick up my camera. Interesting people I see on the streets, faces, outfits, behaviours, interactions.
