For me, getting grounded and staying focused is directly related to a daily ritual of some sort of physical movement outside. Whether it's riding my bike or going for a walk with my dog, I've never come back and regretted doing it!
I am a retired photography teacher and used to be surrounded by art colleagues who kept me focused and inspired. It has been difficult to stay challenged and engaged with my photography without daily conversations about photography and art and to be honest my teaching. To stay focused, I try to grab my camera every day, head out for a walk, and shoot no matter what the weather. I produce a weekly PDF newsletter for family and friends filled with photographs I have taken each week. I need to push for new content weekly, and it keeps me going.
Knowledge of my equipment and reminding myself of past successes are a couple of things that can cancel out the noise. And as Julie Aring comments, a walk in nature is the best cure for just about anything.
One thing I can control that helps me stay focused and grounded is taking my greyhound for a walk every day. If the weather is good, which it is most of the time, we go for a long walk to the water. If it's foggy, grey, and humid, we take a shorter walk. I always listen to the sounds of nature: birds, dogs and roosters in the morning and crickets in the evening.
I just purchased the Process Workbook. It's a fantastic inspiration and help for those of us who might not have much a local photography community... I'm speaking for myself at least. It's a small way for me to add a little weight to my words when I say "Thank you" for sharing your knowledge and processes (and wonderful photography!) so generously with the photography community.
Luke, I really appreciate this note, very much! Thank you! I hope you pick up NOTICE Journal on Sunday too and let it inspire you, it's a perfect companion to the Workbook

I love all of this Kim!

The reminders are so key!

One of the many benefits of having a dog :)
One thing I can control is timelines/due dates. I feel really grounded when I set defined terms for my clients and myself.
Not easy but so important!
Committing to an evening a week for “art” - of whatever form! The loose schedule helps me stay disciplined.
Excellent!

Keeping to the promise that I made to myself to take a daily walk, even if it's only around the block, and to take at least one picture.
That is an EXCELLENT promise!
